How To Attenuate Bruise

If you take a blood thinner, such as aspirin, warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven), dabigatran (Pradaxa), rivaroxaban (Xarelto), apixaban (Eliquis), or clopidogrel (Plavix), you are likely to bruise more easily.

Main symptoms are pain, swelling, and skin discoloration. The bruise begins as a pinkish red color that can be very tender to touch. It is often difficult to use the muscle that has been bruised. For example, a deep thigh bruise is painful when you walk or run.

Call your health care provider right away if you feel extreme pressure in a bruised part of your body, especially if the area is large or very painful. This may be due to compartment syndrome, and can be life-threatening. You should receive emergency care.

A frequent concern among older patients is thetendency to bruise. While few patients presentto the dermatologist with bruising as a primaryconcern, most dermatologists will receive questionsfrom patients about strategies they can use to avoidor minimize bruising. Clinicians and patients traditionallyhave not had any interventions to directly target bruising, although some agents have been used to improve thehealth and function of aged skin with the goal to therebyreduce bruising.

The body needs vitamin K to help the blood clot when necessary. But a pill may not be the best solution, especially for those taking blood thinners or other medications. Topical vitamin K, however, shows some promise as a remedy for bruises and is generally safe for most people to use.

Some people bruise more easily than others. If you seem to bruise all the time without knowing where the bruise came from, you may be someone who bruises easily. Here are some factors that make bruising more likely:

Such bruising is an annoying, yet common, problem as our bodies age. Many of my patients are flummoxed by the bruises on their skin, not even recalling any trauma that led to the purplish marks. Easy bruising as we age can be traced to several factors.

Bruising is a natural part of having invasive procedures. In fact, bruising should be expected after many procedures and does not mean anything bad has happened. Bruising commonly happens after surgical procedures like rhinoplasty (nose job), face-lift, and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery). Even minimally invasive procedures with injectables like Botox and dermal fillers can cause bruising. While most bruises resolve within a week or two these can be troubling for patients who want to get back to life quickly with minimal downtime.

Foods high in bromelain have been shown to dramatically reduce bruising. Bromelain is an enzyme that helps break down proteins needed to clear up bruising faster. Foods high in bromelain include pineapple (the juice and the stem), papaya, kiwifruit, and figs. Pineapple is among the best source of bromelain. Bromelain supplements are available however some studies have suggested that ingesting the fresh fruit of a pineapple, particularly the stem, contains more than 10x the active enzyme than available supplements. When should you start If you want the best effect, start up some bromelain rich foods in the few days leading up to your procedure and continue for up to a week after depending on the procedure. This can help clear up bruises even after injuries like an unexpected fall.

There is no way to determine exactly how long your bruises will last after lip fillers. Some people notice their bruising has cleared up within a few days. Other patients who are more prone to bruising have to wait a few weeks before the bruises are gone. Most people have to wait at least a week for their bruises to heal completely.

There are some steps you can take to decrease your chances of severe bruising after your fillers. These efforts might not eliminate bruising entirely, but they should prevent the bruises from getting worse.

Everyone bruises differently. Children can be more likely to get bumps and bruises because they are often more physically active. Eld
